Auto Substantiate (formerly Smart Reference) suggests references and claims for materials prepared for review in Pepper Flow. References are suggested based on previous usage by comparing the text in your new document with previously linked text to identify similar phrases. Claims (if enabled for your organization) are suggested based on an exact match of claim text or claim variations in your approved claims library. If matches are found, Pepper Flow will suggest references and claims that you can choose to accept or reject.
Before you start
Auto Substantiate relies on previously highlighted text in your materials that are properly linked to References to make suggestions. The only supported linkable References are documents added to the Library, not uploads or URLs. Therefore, for the tool to work, text must be highlighted AND references linked as part of your substantiation process.
If your organization uses Claims management, product claims and their variations must be approved in Pepper Flow. Auto Substantiate relies on an exact match between the text in the material and the approved claim text or variation in your claims library.

Why didn’t Auto Substantiate have any suggestions?
When running Auto Substantiate, you may not get any results.
There are a few reasons this could have occurred:
- You haven't used the highlight tool to link text in promotional documents to references. The Auto Substantiate tool will only provide suggestions based on previous linked references that were created using the highlight tool.
- Your Claims or variations are not yet in Approved state.
- The Auto Substantiate algorithm didn’t find any matches. Reference suggestions take many things into account, including the number of times a reference has been used, the number of words highlighted, and the order of the words.
- The file type for your material is not text-based. Pepper Flow will only suggest references for text that it can identify. If text is embedded in an image or graphic, Pepper Flow will not identify that text and will not provide suggested references.
- The claim is not an exact text match. Pepper Flow will look for an exact match of claim text in the material to the claim text and variations in your approved claims library. Check for punctuation or slight mis-wordings that could have caused a mis-match.
